Among the various specialisations, he was assigned to the Alpini d’Arresto (mountain troops responsible for manning border fortifications), a posting he regarded as a continuation of his family history, as his father had served in the Guardia alla Frontiera (literally “Border guard”, a military corps tasked with the defence of the Italian frontier) during the war.
Upon completion of the course, he was posted to Tolmezzo (Province of Udine), headquarters of the 11th Alpini d’Arresto Regiment, holding the rank of AUC Sergeant.
Assigned to the “Val Tagliamento” Alpini Battalion, he was then transferred to Paluzza (Province of Udine), headquarters of the 212th Company, responsible for the fortifications at Monte Croce Carnico Pass. During this period, he also attended the gunner training course at San Candido (Province of Bolzano) with the “Val Brenta” Alpini Battalion.
After being commissioned as Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the “Val Tagliamento” Battalion Headquarters at Stazione per la Carnia. There, he held several appointments, including Company Commander responsible for the fortifications at Campiolo and Deputy Adjutant Major.
