Antonio Cattarini was born in Trieste in 1947 to a family originally from Lussinpiccolo (Mali Lošinj).
In 1967 he graduated from the Nautical Technical Institute of Trieste, and the following year he entered the Naval Academy of Livorno as a Conscripted Officer Cadet.
In 1970 he attended flight training in Alghero and Latina. After qualifying as a pilot, he was assigned to the 41st Wing, 87th Anti-Submarine Group at Sigonella (Province of Catania), where he served as a Combat Ready Pilot.
In 1985 he was posted to Marisardegna (Sardinia Local Maritime Command) at La Maddalena (Province of Sassari), holding several positions including Air Section Chief, Operations Center Manager, Chief Operations Officer, and Senior Officer assigned to the Admiral.
In 1993 he was assigned to the Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Fleet in Rome, where he was responsible for the operational control of maritime patrol aircraft. From 1996 to 2006, he served in Trieste within the Information and Security Department of the Defence General Staff.
In 2006 he was placed in the auxiliary reserve, reaching retirement in 2012.
